29 imagesMy son, Dylan, met Carlo the first time in October 2014. He was standing at a parking space right outside of Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and started speaking German with Dylan. My son told him nicely that he couldn’t understand any German and asked if Carlo spoke English instead. Immediately he started to speak beautiful American English. This is where my story about Carlo Behrens starts. I’ve been following him ever since and will continue to do so. The story about his life is beyond everything I’ve been a part of during my 25 years as a journalist. He was born close to Reeperbahn 1962. His father was a co-owner of the legendary Star Club and his mother worked as a star hustler. He was only four years old when his mother decided to move over to Connecticut right outside of New York City in United States of America. Growing up as a German in America was the hardest time of Carlos life. This is the first part of my first 17 months together with Carlo Behrens.
